Training America's sailor has changed...

America's first merchant training ship went into service in 1874. The USS St. May arrived in New York harbor on December 14, 1874.
No before that there were several training ships in Baltimore, Charleston, Boston and New Bedford and New York City.

The first Non-Navy maritime school on aship city and or state began in 1857 in Baltiom: the :foating school" n 1859 Charlseston, S.c the school ship Lode-bar was fitted by the Rev. W.B. Yates by the Port Society. Both schools did not take in adjudicated juvenile delinquens. Yet they did survice poor boys abnd at risk youths. In the instance of the Lode-bar, they boys lived aboard and sialed in South Carolina Waters.
